Just a lil bit of Foley

Foley is one of those things I got to grips with easily and love it from the start. College was when I first really learned about what Foley was and the process behind it. I knew a little about it from watching a behind-the-scenes clip on Friends! For an assessment in College, we had to record audio and sound effects for a scene from the film Alien. Unfortunately, however, we were split into groups to record certain sections. One group had to record the music, another group recorded different sound effects and our group recorded the vocals. I would've loved to participate in all aspects of recording, but had a lot of fun recording the vocals anyway!
After everything was recorded, we had to put everything together and make it all fit the scene perfectly. This meant putting in all the recordings, changing the EQ and levels and listening very carefully to fit all the intricate details. I enjoyed that assessment so much! Yes it was long and tedious but so cool to watch back after everything was added.
In University, I wasn't expecting to do anymore Foley because it is a Management course. However, I was lucky to be able do it once more for a module to learn how to use Pro Tools audio software. We didn't record any sound effects, just downloaded them from the internet or ones already available on the PCs. I decided to use a clip of an Artic Fox hunting in the snow. I had to add in every step the fox took and then the leap into the snow as it caught its food. Because the work was just for the lesson, I wasn't able to finish or proper sort out the sound levels etc. It would've been a cool little project to finish, however I forgot to save the work! My tutor was very impressed with what I'd shown to the class and reminded me how much I loved doing foley.
If I had the right software and tools to do foley, it would be something I would love to get into more.
(Hopefully my tutor has saved what I did last year so I can link the clip. For now, just use your imagination!!)
